INFINITI and Nissan VC-Turbo Engine Named to Ward’s Best 10 Engines

Every year Ward’s AutoWorld magazine comes out with a list of the ten best engines in the United States market. This list has been going on since 1994 and the winners are for the following model year. For example, the winners for 2020 are announced in 2019. We’re proud to announce that the VC-Turbo engine, used for INFINITI and Nissan models, has been named to Ward’s Best 10 Engines for 2020. How do they choose the top 10 engines?

So how does Ward’s AutoWorld choose which engines are the best? First, the engine must meet their requirements. The engine must be in a regularly produced vehicle that was put on sale within the first quarter of the year. They must also be in a vehicle that has a brim trim price of no more than $60,000. This has increased from the previous $50,000 price. After they meet the qualifications, the engines are put through a testing period that lasts two months. The editors use every day driving situations to evaluate the engines on objective and subjective criteria. They consider power, torque output, noise, vibration and harshness levels, technical relevance, and comparative numbers. Each engine is compared to the other engines in the competition.

How does the VC-Turbo work?

The purpose of the VC-Turbo is to achieve high efficiency and high power while synchronizing with the driver. This engine uses a multi-link system that varies between piston top dead center and bottom dead center positions. This allows for more control of the compression ratio. It can move between a ratio of 8:1 and 14:1. How does it work?

When a compression ratio change is needed, the actuator motor moves the actuator arm.
The arm rotates the control shaft.
The control shaft moves the lower-link which changes the multi-link system angle.
The multi-link system adjusts the vertical position of the piston stroke within the cylinder.
