Let’s explore why the two Nissan sedans were highly rated in Pedestrian Crash Prevention by the IIHS together!

2019 & 2020 Nissan Maxima and Altima Models Pedestrian Crash Prevention Testing

The 2019 and 2020 Nissan Maxima and Altima models were a few of a number of mid-size sedan models evaluated by the IIHS with their Pedestrian Crash Prevention tests. These evaluations conducted by the IIHS consisted of six total tests, including three different tests at two different speed levels. The Maxima, which was the only vehicle to avoid the obstacle in all six tests, was rated as “Superior”, while the Altima was rated as “Advanced”, scoring slightly below the Maxima.

Nissan Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection

One big reason why the Nissan Altima and Nissan Maxima scored so well in the IIHS testing is that both models feature Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection. This driver assistance feature uses a combination of camera and radar technology to track nearby pedestrians and vehicles. If a pedestrian is detected by this feature, visual and audible alerts will activate along with the automatic brakes, which can help reduce or prevent impact.
