Is the continuously-variable transmission standard on the 2017 Versa Note?

Does the 2017 Nissan Versa Note have a manual transmission?

Many economy cars boast of their low MSRP, but what they fail to tell you about is what you sacrifice with the low MSRP. That’s where the Nissan Versa Note comes in to shake things up a bit. Does the Versa Note make transmission sacrifices like its competitors? Does the 2017 Nissan Versa Note have a manual transmission? Learn more right here.

What transmission options are available for the Nissan Versa Note?

The transmission is perhaps the second most important component in a modern vehicle. The engine creates all the power, the wheel and tires impart the power on the road, but it’s the transmission that does all the work in between.

Typically a car with an MSRP as low as the Versa Note’s $15,480 comes with the caveat of having a manual transmission. If you want something more than a manual you typically have to throw a few thousand dollars at that problem, but the Versa Note for 2017 doesn’t have a manual transmission option at all. In fact, it come standard with a continuously-variable transmission across the entire Versa Note lineup.

What is a continuously-variable transmission?

A continuously-variable transmission or CVT is an amazing piece of technology. By incorporating two variable pulleys and a belt or a chain between them, a CVT is able to change the gear ratios without actually shifting gears. Even with a regular automatic transmission, your car is still shifting. That means there are brief moments when your engine’s power is being put to no good use.

Since this typically occurs under acceleration, when your engine is doing the most work, this shifting puts a huge dent in your fuel economy. With a CVT, you do not have that problem, as you smoothly accelerate from any speed to any speed. In fact, in almost all cases, a CVT will even beat out a manual transmission in terms of efficiency.
