Driving and biking safety tips

Bikers have just as much of a right to the road as drivers do. However, there can still be frustrations for drivers and bikers alike when it comes to sharing the road. Who has the right of way? Sharing the road safety tips

First, let’s hit the biking basics. Bikers should always wear helmets, especially when they share the road with motorists. Always ride with no passengers on a single-rider bike. Unsecure passengers only pose a risk to everyone involved. Bikers should do their best to avoid busy roads when traffic is peaking. Just make it easy on yourself if you’re a biker. Okay, now let’s get to what drivers can do.

1.) Mind your space 

Don’t crowd a cyclist. That can only make the biker mad and cause an accident. Back off a bit and give everyone in the bike lane at least three or four feet of space.

2.) Check your driver side mirror 

If you’re parked on the side of a street, always check your sideview mirrors before opening your door. Cyclists assume that you are checking your surroundings, so if your driver side door opens and causes a collision, it’s on you. Just take two seconds to make sure the area is clear before getting out. 

3.) Look right when turning right 

There’s a decent chance that a cyclist could be approaching your blind spot when you’re preparing to make a right turn. Just look over your shoulder before you get in position to turn so you don’t cut off or hit any biker.
