Historical Heritage Sites to visit on Guam

Our beautiful and historic island paradise has a multitude of historical landmarks and different heritage sites that tell the story of our ancestors and our home. From the Latte that was the foundation for the huts of the Chamorros, to the pristine underwater reefs surrounding the island, to the remains of the elegant Spanish buildings which can be seen throughout our island.

Before you head out to take a look at some of our amazing landmarks, you’re going to need a vehicle that is ready to take on any of the different terrains that you may face.

Talofofo

Located in the southern part of the island, Talofofo extends from the shoreline and into the valleys along the Ugum and Talofofo rivers, where many archeologists think most of the early people of the island built their settlements. After the reduccion in the late 1600s, it is believed that those living in Talofofo were moved to Inarajan leaving the main village abandoned until moving back in the early 1900s. The Talofofo area was also a major part of World War II, being the landing point for invading Japanese forces. After the war, the new community of Talofofo was built and has been there ever since. Some of the major attractions of the Talofofo area include a jungle riverboat cruise that transports visitors from Talofofo Bay inland to a cultural village display.

Spanish Forts

There are many different beautiful Spanish forts that dot the different bays on our island. Most of these forts were designed to shoot cannons in order to protect the island from potential invaders. There were six different forts built in Hagåtña, four to protect Umatac Bay, three defending Apra Harbor, and one final fort to protect Merizo.

Tarzan Falls

A popular destination for our island’s Boonie Stompers, the Tarzan Falls fall from a range of 8 to 50 feet. A deep pool located at the base of the falls is an ideal place to cool off after spending the morning hiking over. Another great thing about visiting the Tarzan Falls is seeing the freshwater shrimp which live in pools off of the Ylig River.
