Ways you can avoid distracted driving

Distracted driving is a broad term. Many things can count as distracted driving and that’s why it is one of the leading causes of car accidents and on-road deaths. Distracted driving can include, but is not limited to, texting, eating, loud talking, and futzing around with anything inside your vehicle. While some distractions are nearly unavoidable, you can certainly manage your them. Keep reading to learn how.

Put your phone away 

Smartphones are a wonderful part of today’s modern world. They are also all too often partly to blame for distracted driving. Texts and other notifications are tempting to look at, and that becomes a dangerous temptation when we’re behind the wheel. Minimize all temptations by silencing your phone and putting it away. If your pocket is too close for comfort, store it in your glove box until you get to your destination.

Don’t carry too many passengers 

Even if your car can safely fit five people, don’t cram everyone in if you don’t have to. Yes, carpooling is encouraged but not if it causes unsafe conditions inside the car. If you have a group of talkative friends, all of that conversation can be very distracting even if you don’t take your eyes off the road. Don’t pack everyone in if you think they will take your attention. 

Keep it quiet(er) 

Going with the point above, it’s important to keep your music at a manageable volume. If you crank it too loud, you won’t be able to hear anyone around you. That includes honking motorists, pedestrians, and police officers. Studies have shown that loud noises are just as distracting for drivers as visual impairments. Do you ever turn your radio down so you can see better when you’re looking for specific address numbers? The quieter it is, the better you can focus on the road.
