What makes a coupe a coupe?

If you have done even a miniscule amount of car shopping, you have probably heard the word “coupe” thrown around haphazardly. Did you know that there is an actual definition for it? That’s right, a coupe isn’t just a small, sporty car. There are certain characteristics that define a coupe. When you come to INFINITI Guam, you will find a few coupe models on our lot. Keep reading to learn what you should look for to determine whether a car is a coupe or not.

What defines a coupe?

There are multiple, slightly varied definitions today of what a coupe is. But what remains consistent is that coupes are almost always defined as having two doors. If your car has just two doors, you can probably get away with calling it a coupe. Other things that you should look for include the car’s roofline, body size, and seating.

Coupe design

In 1977, the International Organization for Standardization defined coupe cars as having a “closed body, usually with limited rear volume, a fixed roof of which a portion may be openable, at least two seats in at least one row…two doors…and two side windows.” So, that sounds like a… car. Well, the main takeaway from that is the specific design. Coupes have sloped rooflines, just two doors, and, many times, only two seats. If you were to put a coupe next to a sedan, you should be able to tell the difference. Sedans have four doors and full-sized rear seats.
